Bringing up mums.....
Navneet Mumbai Mums Guide, released yesterday, makes parenting a little more
easy………By Vidya Shivram
Headstart or Mary Poppins? Cathedral or Bombay Scottish? What’s the donation like? Should junior go for French lessons or
drama workshops?
Are these thoughts your nightmare? The choices a bolt on blissful existence? Well, here’s some good news for expectant
mothers, young fathers, newly weds, worried grandparents and in fact, anyone whose life revolves around kids.
Last evening saw the release of Rina Mehta’s Navneet Mumbai Mums Guide, at Crossword bookstore.
Commissioner of police, Ronnie Mendonca, did the honours, and the first book was presented to Gauri Khan, wife of actor
Shahrukh Khan, and a young mother herself.
The book took shape when Mehta went through the exercise of finding the ‘right’ nursery and the school for her child. The
various schools in the city, admission procedures, hobby classes, kiddie party organisers and tips form the content of this
volume, priced at Rs. 100.
The event was followed by an interactive discussion in the life of a child in the city today, focussing on education,
Dr. R.K.Anand, noted child specialist, chaired the discussion. Others on the panel included Mehta, Kamala Laxman, an
author of children’s books, Mrs. Shroff, principal of the Infant School of Cathedral and John Cannon School, and Maureen
Sequeira, principal of Headstart.
While acknowledging that policy decisions in education had to come from the government, the session highlighted various
important aspects in children’s upbringing. An enthusiastic audience (largely mothers with kids in tow) shared their views
and experiences in the different stages of their child’s education.
The horror of not getting your darling admitted in the best school in town, the right age to send your baby to a play school,
how extracurricular activities taper off as academics loom larger, having fun with your kids, the crucial role of teachers, the
bane of tuition’s - these were just a few of the topics touched upon in a lively session.
Many parents present were keen on being guided in choosing the best, was clear from the sales of Mehta’s book that
promptly followed the event.

A book for mothers with young children.....
Navneet Mumbai Mum’s Guide, written by Rina Mehta, was released by Oxford & IBH Publishing Co.Pvt. Ltd. recently.
A directory of Mumbai schools, nurseries, classes, party organisers and more, this book is meant for mothers who need to have a
source of information pertaining to kids.
The book is divided into three sections - schools, classes and parties. An alphabetical and area index, along with the icons used,
make for easy reading. Relevent details like registration and admission ages, as well as their dates and timings, have been
thoughtfully included.
Rina Mehta is an honours graduate in economics, and started her career in advertising. But she chucked it all up when her daughter
was born four years ago to become a fulltime mother. Currently she is involved in the field of integral education, which means
'educating the child as a whole', and hopes it will soon become a part of the mainstream curriculum.
"It was when my daughter Tanvi was born that I felt the need for such a book," says the author. Her very own listing of addresses,
phone numbers, timings, dates and admission ages resulted in this full-fledged book which took three years to compile.
She says, "Being a mother, I realised that Mumbai is a box of opportunities and activities for children. I can choose from a million
options what I feel is most suitable for my child. That's the wonderful part."

Mums celebrate.....
Whoever thought mothers will ever need to refer a book to give the best to the kids? Well, for the Generation-X of supermoms it
seems just the right thing to do, if the crowd of enthusiastic young mothers at the launch of Rina Mehta’s Navneet Mumbai
Mum’s Guide was any indication. The book, launched at Crossword, had police commissionser Ronnie Mendonca and Gauri Khan, the
pretty wife of super star Shahrukh Khan, who introduced it in style. The book lists playschools, schools, various courses and classes,
fun stuff like organising parties….So when they get too much to handle, you know what to do.
