SCHOOL INTERVIEWS
Things your child could be asked at a school interview.
- When is your birthday ? How old are you now / last year / next year ?
What games do you play? Which is your favorite game? What do you play cricket with? Which are indoor /
- The child's name.
- Home address
- Telephone number
- Mother's name / Father's name
- Mother's occupation / Father's Occupation
- Have you any brothers / sisters ? (older than you / younger than you)?
- Name of brothers / sisters and which school they go to.
- How many people stay in your house ?
- The name of your present school / present teacher / the number of children in your class. Talk about your school.
outdoor games?
- How do you come to school? What did you see on the way?
- Days of the week. Names of the days of the week. Which days do you not go to school?
- Months of the year. Name them - in which months do you have holidays?
- Clothes and seasons. Which clothes do you wear in summer / winter / monsoons eg. Sweater, t-shirt, shorts,
trousers, dress, etc.
- colours / shapes - should be able to name and pair.
- Furniture. What pieces of furniture belong to different rooms? Kitchen appliances - pots and pans.
- Recognise animals / birds. Young ones, homes, noises, food, domestic animal pets and wild animals (in
the jungle) which swim / fly / walk/ run.
- Recognise and name - fruits, vegetables and their colours and taste.
- Recognise flowers / trees - the common ones (e.g. coconut / banana).
- Parts of the body and their functions.
- Musical instruments, tools / machines used by tailors / carpenters / gardners / doctors, etc.
- IMPORTANT - should know atleast three nursery rhymes with actions and should know the meaning of the
words recited e.g. Jack fell down and broke his crown - What is a crown? Can you wear a crown? Who
wears a crown?
- a) Should recognise a beach, all that you take to the beach and what you do with it, an airport, a playground,
a railway station, a park, a zoo, an exhibition an aquarium, museum, etc.
b) Recognising vehicles - tricycles, bicycle, car, truck, etc.
- Your best comic strip. Why do you like a particular hero?
- Your favourite toy? And why? What do you see in a toy shop?
- Your best friend.
- Parties - Do you like going to parties? What do you do there? How do you know how old the child is?
- People who work for us.
- Day and night (Other opposites).
- Sun - moon - stars - clouds.
- Where do we buy our things - e.g. grocer, green grocer, provision store, etc.
- Simple picture puzzles / picture blocks.
- Drawing simple shapes.
- Following instructions - e.g. put a block under the chair, pick up the red bucket and fill it up wth 3 spadefuls
of sand - something to this effect.
- IMPORTANT - description of pictures - what is happening in the picture.
- General awareness of the environment in which we live.
- Alphabets with phonics and matching first sound / letter with pictures e.g. A - Apple, B - Ball, etc.
- Number values 1 - 10 / counting.
- Animals - homes - young ones - sounds, etc. Which animals take children for rides?
- Why are animals in cages? Why must you not put your fingers in the cage? What is the man who looks after
the animals called?
- What is the hair on the lion? What is baby lion / tiger / bear called? Which animals live in water? Which animals
have long tails and swing? Which animal has a very long neck?
- Circus - Have you been to a circus? What animals did you see there? Which animals did tricks? Who made you
laugh? What is a tent? Why does a circus put up a tent? Why do people live in a tent? What do you like best
at the circus?
- Signal lights - What colours are the lights? What does each one tell us? What would happen if we do not obey
the lights? Where must you cross the roads? Why? Where should you walk on the roads? Why must you not
run on the road? What is an ambulance? What colour is the fire brigade? How does it tell people to move out
of the way? Why does it ring the bell? Why must people let the fire brigade go quickly? How do they put out a fire?
- Colour 6 blues or 4 greens or 1 red. What is 1 more than six? What is one lessthan 9 or 7? What is one more
than 6 - 8 or 5? Complete the pattern.
- What is the same? What is different?
- Things go together - shoe / sock / cup / saucer.
- Alphabet puzzles.
- Picture talk - circus, seaside, garden, park, school, birthday party.
